What to do in Réunion

Réunion on two wheels

Volcano, cirques, lagoons: the intense island is earned from the saddle. Here are our favourite routes and the ideal bike for each.

½ to 1 day Intermediate

The Volcano road

Climb to the Piton de la Fournaise via the Plaine des Cafres. The road winds up to the Plaine des Sables, a unique lunar landscape, then to the Pas de Bellecombe facing the crater. Bring a warm layer: it's cool at altitude.

Best with: CFMOTO 800 NK · Suzuki V-Strom 800

1 day Sporty

The Cirque of Cilaos

The legendary 400-bend road climbs to the village of Cilaos, nestled in the mountains. A string of hairpins and narrow tunnels, spectacular on a bike. Reward at the top: thermal baths, Cilaos wine and UNESCO-listed panoramas.

Best with: Yamaha XSR 125 · CFMOTO 800 NK

½ day Easy

The west coast

From Saint-Paul to Saint-Leu along the lagoon: the beaches of Boucan Canot, Saint-Gilles-les-Bains, l'Hermitage and its snorkelling spots. The ideal scooter ride for a relaxed trip by the water.

Best with: Vespa Primavera 50 · Yamaha N-MAX 125

1 to 3 days Adventure

The island tour

About 210 km to circle Réunion on the coastal road. The northern coastal road, the wild southern road with its lava flows at Sainte-Rose and Le Tremblet. The great classic to do at least once.

Best with: Suzuki V-Strom 800 · Indian Scout Bobber Sixty

Our tips before you set off

  • Fill up before heading to the highlands: petrol stations get scarce at altitude.
  • The weather changes fast: sunshine on the coast, rain and cool air in the cirques and volcano.
  • Set off early for the highlands — clouds often rise around midday.
  • We'll help you plan a tailor-made route to match your level and your wishes.
